Health violations in 2 P.E.I. food outlets earn warning letters

Two P.E.I. food outlets have been issued warning letters from the department of health and wellness after routine inspections turned up violations.

Both the Gallery Store in Malpeque and the Rodd Brudenell Dundarave Canteen were cited by P.E.I. environmental health officials in August.

The Gallery Store had two violations when inspected early that month.

"The hand-washing station did not have hot water and was not set up with liquid soap and paper towel in a dispenser," said Ryan Neale, senior environmental health officer with the department of health and wellness.

"And the second violation was sanitizer for work surfaces was not immediately available and they didn't have any testing equipment to ensure the sanitizer would be at the proper strength when it's mixed."

The warning letter was issued after a follow-up visit on August 28 showed that the violations continued.

The Gallery Store is now closed for the season, so the department is looking for the problems to be resolved before it re-opens in 2016.

No hair nets

The violation for the Rodd Brudenell Dundarave canteen noted they did not have a sanitizing step in their manual dishwashing procedure and that food handlers were not wearing hair restraints while handling food.

A follow-up inspection on Sept. 25 showed the same two problems still existed and a warning letter was issued.

Neale said those issues have since been resolved.
